Identifying Clutch Problems Sooner Rather Than Later

If you drive a manual transmission vehicle, there is a good chance that you are going to run into a problem with your clutch at some point in the cars life. Most of the time, when a car gets to about the one hundred thousand mile mark, give or take about thirty thousand miles on either side, the clutch tends to go out. While replacing a clutch is no easy task and is without question going to cost quite a bit of money, there’s a good chance most problems can be fixed without need of replacement if you catch them early enough. If you do think that something is starting to go wrong with your clutch, it’s essential that you take your car in as soon as possible before the problem becomes too extensive to repair.

Preventative Maintenance

When it comes to taking care of a clutch, you can help ensure that yours last much longer if you watch for early signs of problems that may be developing over time. If you know a bit about how a standard transmission system works, you may be able to take a look yourself, but there is a good chance that this should be left to a professional. Taking your car in for regular inspections should help you to avoid having to replace your clutch early on in your cars lifespan. You may notice that your clutch is starting to slip, or that it doesn’t feel right when you’re trying to pop it out of gear. This is an indication that something is going wrong, so you should take the car in to a local mechanic as soon as you possibly can.

The Clutch’s Job

The job of a clutch is to pop the transmission out of gear, allowing the driver to shift the car into another gear. If the clutch goes out, you aren’t going to be able to shift correctly and the car isn’t going to work. You can think of the clutch as the connector between the engine and the wheels of the automobile—when the car is in gear, the wheels are connected to the engine and the driver has control over the vehicle. When the clutch is pushed in, the engine to wheel connection is disengaged, which allows the driver to change gears and pop it back in. It’s because of this relationship that a car will stall out if it’s not moving and a person takes their foot off of the clutch while the car is in gear.

Replacing a Clutch

While there are steps you can take to help prevent your clutch from needing replacement as long as possible, there is no question that this type of thing is unavoidable after a certain amount of time. The clutch is, after all, just like any other working piece of machinery. Keep in mind, if your clutch does go out and you have to get a replacement, it can end up costing up to a few thousand dollars. There are many vehicles that are worth less than the overall cost to fix the clutch, meaning a broken clutch could literally total an older vehicle. Keep this in mind if you own an older model vehicle that’s starting to show clutch problems.
